The gain setting (amplifier) is set to match the output of the deck.  A change of speakiers to a pair that is rated to a lower potential doesn't mean that the gain is suddenly now wrong.

Let's assume that the gain was properly set to begin with.  With no changes in the system upstream of the amp (like the deck), the gain should have been left where it was.  A statement like "the gain is between a 1/2 and 3/4" is absolutely useless.  When you set a gain, the touch at the final point is so precise that you wouldn't be able to say it was "1/15 to 1/18th on the dial" any more than you could say it was 1/4 to 3/4th.  You would just know that it was properly set, that's all.  Position on the dial has nothing to do with anything.

Using available resources, reset the gain so that the amp and deck work in sync.  Leave all trebles and eq's at flat during the meantime, as they are not a part of the gain-setting process.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Thanks for the advice.I know when they set the gains the first time they just did it by ear.and when the new speakers were put in they would clip.so I turned them down.when I said 3/4 up that was more less a reference point I just didn't want you guys to think I had the gains all the way up and couldn't figure out why I kept blowing speakers.I did do the big 3,and added a yellow top since then.would that of made a difference?

i've decided to go with a different tweeter. but still going to use the 6.5 and the cross-overs so my question is, the tweeter i'm getting has a inline cross-over. now will i hook this up with the input power to the cross-over, or not use it at all wire it to the tweeter output on the cross-over? the tweeters are orion hcca 1in.
It is what it is!
