how much current are you expecting for the circuit?

A resistor wouldn't work.

An LM317 adjustable voltage regulator or even a zener diode (depending on how much current you need) would work best.

Actually, it might only be like 1 amp.

I have a 6-volt 5 amp power supply, but I need to power something at 6 volts AND something at 4.5 volts. It's two battery operated devices, the 6 volt one normally takes 4 AA batteries, and the 4.5 volt one takes 3 AAA batteries. Would this be possible to run both on the same power supply?
