Hopefully someone here will know: Does an alternator care which way it turns? On my project it might give me another mounting option.

AFAIK they will counter-work but it isn't recommended.

Their intended direction determines their fan type (clockwise or anti-clockwise) and brushes are offset to one side (leading side?).

Most alternators have a counter-direction version.

Oldspark, thanks. I hadn't thought about the brushes, but had thought about the fan. I appreciate the help.
