I was reading the specs on my eclipse XA1200 sub amp and I noticed that it has the same output at 4 ohms than at 2 ohms; how is this possible?

From the manual:

XA1200 Power Output:

RMS Power at 14.4 Volt Power Supply @ CEA 2006
4 ohms @ 20 Hz to 20 KHz Mono 500W X 1
2 ohms @ 20 Hz to 20 KHz Mono 500W X 1

It's a smart power supply...
It increases the voltage to reduce the current through the output devices. Nothing to worry about, and an honest spec.
The Alpine 1.1000 does the same thing - 1kW at 2- or 4- ohms.
i am an idiot will likely want to come in here and go into much more detail, but he'll be saying basically the same thing! [:P]
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Thank you haemphyst for your reply; that means that I have more choices when connecting subwoofer(s)!
