When fusing the main power line, is there any length it must be from the battery?

No more than 18 inches from the battery.

cary is right... 12-18 inches from the battery... the fuse is there to protect the power wire itself, not the amp.

You can also put a fuse before the amplifier as well, most people use a fused distribution block. But the fuse at the battery is essential. Unfortunately I learned that lesson the hard way when I was 16. I had my power wire short out under the dash... flash, smoke, fire, VERY VERY BAD THING! And that was only running to a old 50watt amp!
