If you mean terminals 87 and 87a on a 30/40 amp relay: 87 is normally open. When coil is not energized, 87 is not connected to #30.
87a is normally closed. When coil is not energized, 87a IS connected to #30.
When coil is energized, 87 and 87a change states with reference to #30
