4 channel amp smokes

So I just did an install for a friend on a 2008 Lancer. I put in Alpine Type S component speakers in the front Infinti Premus speakers in the rear all powered by a 4 Channel Polk PA660 amp. The system was ran with 0 Gauge from the front to the back to a capacitor and from the cap two 4 gauge wires, one for sub amp and one for 4 channel amp. I also put in a clarion crossover. He was two 10inch w6's powered by some Pioneer 750watt amp. The 4 channel amp start to smoke a lot when the volume is at 25 and the bass is hitting. If the subs are off the amp does not smoke even up at Max volume. There a few things that are a little off for the meanwhile until they are shipped to him, the main 0 gauge wire is not fused, and currently is not connected until he gets one it was only hooked up for testing purposes. Also he has factory headunit so the bass and rear high low converter is on the rear speaker output. I have never seen a problem like this before. The amp smokes only when the bass hits and isnt even getting hot. Thanks for the help guys.MECP Certified

What do you have for the grounds to the amps? What resistance are you running the speakers / subs at?Kenny

do a voltage drop test on the 4 channel when it is smoking, you could be dropping voltage bad and causing the amp to work harder than it needs to. ive never seen your particular problem but having the LOC's hooked up to the back speakers and having a good amount of bass can cause feedback problems because the bass physically pushes the back speakers and creates an audio loop until you turn the system down. it might be possible that feedback is causing the amp to work in strange ways

Well, the obvious answer is smoke = bad so don't let your customer drive away with that behavior no matter what unless you want to be potentially liable for burning his vehicle down. First yes, measure your voltages. Also try another amp. Smoking without blowing the amplifier fuses is unusual so also check that the proper fuses are installed in the amp.Support the12volt.com
