Hey all, I'm looking to instal an amp in my 1992 honda civic and I've never done an amp instal before. I have a sony XAV-7W head unit and 4 kenwood 5 1/4" speakers. I might add one subwoffer down the road but for now just want an amp. What brand should I get and how much power should it be? Should it power all 4 speakers or jsut two? My budget is around $150. Thanks in advance!

Are the 4 speakers the same? how many watts RMS handles each?

One option is to buy a 4 channel amp that matches the RMS power handling of your speakers (example, if each of them is rated at 50 watts RMS, a 4 x 50 watts RMS @4 ohms amp would be great to power the 4 of them). And if you get a 2 ohm stable, tri way capable amp, when you buy a sub later on, you could wire 2 speakers in parallel to channel one, 2 speakers in parallel to channel two, and bridge channels 3 and 4 to power your sub. One thing you would have to consider is that if you go this way, the sub to buy would have to adequate for the power output of the 2 bridged channels. (if the same amp example is taken, that would be around 200 watts RMS @2 ohms as a rule of thumb)

To recommend a specific one I need an answer to the questions I made before.

Sorry, yes my speakers are all the same. They're all 30 rms. So I should look for a 30 x 4 watt amp? They're small speakers and I don't want to blow them.

yep. 4 x 30 RMS... more important than the size is the power handling, as long as you don't exceed it there should be no problem. Here is one that fits your speakers: Kenwood KAC-6401. I have own kenwood in the past( not this particular one), and IMO they are a very good price/quality product. I made a little research and find it really cheap at this adress: http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=kenkac6401&svbname=16. However, if you want to add a sub later, you may considering another amp for the sub, since this one would'n be enough to power everything. (even connecting it in parallel you would be giving 20watts RMS to each speaker, and only 80 to the sub) Hope it's useful!
