Yeah I know I've brought this up before... I have my Infinity 3.5's in the dash, they are the reference series which don't have the external crossover, however I was informed last time that they have their own internal one.  I have also heard, however, that anyone who plays 3.5's loud (Like me) are well advised to get some kind of bass blocker to avoid stressing the speakers since they don't play bass.

A friend of mine just got rid of his blown component speakers (Polk 5.25's, about 10 yrs old) and with them went the external crossovers.  Should I use them, or could that cause problems, being that they are a different manufacturer and are meant for different speakers?

You'd be better off just getting a set of bass blockers than trying to use the Polk crossovers because as you pointed out they aren't made for the same speaker.  Bass blockers on the other hand are available in many different configurations and so you can get a pair that matches up perfectly with your 3.5" infinity's.  I'd recommend either the 600 Hz or the 800 Hz versions.
