Power Wire Question

If one had a bad power wire what would be the symptoms? Could this be tested with a volt meter? And If one was not getting enough volts from a head unit would the symptoms be different and if so what would that be like? How do I know what the voltage should read at each spot I test and if I can get ahold of a meter I don't know how to use it. Any sites with directions? Or does anyone have an explanation for dummy's? Thanks

First off it helps if you could explain the problem you’re experiencing. And yes a voltage meter will let you know if you’re getting the proper voltage. Pioneer HU/one 2.2v out. Run to 4ch amp with Y's and that amps out to the other amps in. It's a few years old DEH-1000. About a year ago from having to more than a few times go down the worst pot-holed road I've ever seen - it got ruined that it is very particular on the littlest speck of dust on a CD. So I don't know if more than I thought happened to it. My sound is bad. No matter how much adjusting I do to the 2 amps and HU it sounds horrible and just when I think I get close it changes. I put the speakers I had on one amp to the other and vice versa to see if it was the amp but it still sounds bad. I'm thinking it is the HU though. It wasn't too bad at first until I got the second amp and then it went to pot after that. I got a new rca and that seemed to help. Seems like every time I need to make an adjustment I am turning down the gains more and more. Since I switched speakers on the amps I lost some bass/mids with the speakers on hpf and when it was the other way I had too much. I did remember to change the amps built in hpf/lpf so thats not the prob. I don't have a lot of money so anything I can figure out myself is more money I have to fix the problem.
