I have a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI sedan with Monsoon system. I am interested in adding a subwoofer to reinforce bass response. There appears to be an amplifier below the rear deck. I would appreciate any help with the choice and installation of a powered or passive subwoofer. Thanks for the insight.

The amp on the rear deck is for the interior speakers and you would not be able to run a sub off of that amp. Your best bet is to go with a single sealed sub enclosure and a small amp to power the sub. What's your budget like? That will give us a better idea of what you are working with and we would all be able to put in our 2 cents. Personally, for low budget systems, I like Kenwood amps and Rockford subs.

Unless there's something special about the Monsoon system (other than the factory amp of course), you'll need a Line Out Converter like this one. It gets installed between the factory amp and the speakers. It's main purpose it to change the High Level amplified signal from the factory amp back into a Low Level RCA signal that can be used as input into an aftermarket amp.

Other than that you'll need an amp, sub(s), and an amplifier installation kit (has power, ground, and remote wires).

Did you have anything in mind already? 10's, 12's... SCV or DVC subs, power range, etc...

You will want to follow wvsquirrel's advice, but I would purchase a line out put converter that can handle as much wattage as possible such as the PAC SNI-35 http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-4OGUTagOSwU/ProdView.asp?a=&s=0&cc=01&g=721&id=detailed_info&i=101PL2 since the monsoon system puts out about 1000 watts.

wvsquirrel I do believe that they have 2 monsoon systems out there one is 1000 watts and one is 1400 watts, although I have yet to see the 1400 watt system
