At the left hand side of the menu on this very page, under "Basics", there is a link called "Tools/Equipment." This will give you a very good idea of what we all use in our own shops or for our hobby.
If you want a short list, here it is. (And I'm going to get flamed for leaving something out) DMM, 18 volt high quality power drill, a full set of sockets and wrenches, a wire stripper/crimper, a full assortment of screwdriver bits (Torx, Phillips 1,2,3, Flathead, Security, Square bit...etc.) Lots of extra primary wire, speaker wire, crimp connectors, solder, screws, a good flashlight, toggle switches, a utility knife, a magnet glued onto an unbent coat hanger (for dropped screws and washers...You will drop them). Maybe if you reply and tell us all what type of car you have, we can be a little more specific.
