Hey everyone! I'm kinda new to the whole car audio thing and I'm having a bit of trouble with a new receiver that I'm putting into my car now. Nothing about installing it is the trouble. There are a few things I'm thinking might be wrong and you can tell me if I'm right about any of them. When I turn on my car and turn on my stereo it comes up and it gets a clear signal from the antenna or it registers when it plays cds but the problem is that the speakers aren't getting any sound to them. It was working great for a few days then I tried to hook up some larger speakers to it (two 6 inch subs cheap ones I might add) on top of the ones already hooked in. The total wattage of the subs came to around 300 on top of the 160 watts I already had in there. Now my question is: If the wattage of the speakers is way over the wattage of the stereo unit will it blow the built in amp? By the way, for those wondering the stereo is 160 watt 4 channel. Do not put those 6 inch subs on that HU amp... you will crush your HU and possibly start the thing on fire. I would strongly recommend to get a seperate amp for those 6 inch subs. plus don't forget that the HU amp is probably 160 total watts and is 40w X 4 which means your continuous power per speaker is no higher than 20 w. Hope that helps

The problem is not the wattage, you probably hookup up the speakers in parallel, + to + and - to - on the speakers. If you did then the hu is seeing two ohms and most head units allow only 4 ohm speakers. you could hook up the additional speakers in series, but it won't sound as good as what you probably have now.

First off, the deck will not catch on fire from running any speaker(be it a tweeter or a 15). Second who ever told you that a 6 is considered a sub needs to learn something, mid bass or mid. When it comes the watts issue, the speakers power handling capability has no effect on the source of amplification, but if you are running below the rms of the speaker then you run more of a chance of blowing the speaker( it is better to overpower a speaker then it is to underpower one). As far as fixing the deck if it goes out really depends on what happened to the deck, for the most part it is just easier to buy a new radio then paying for it to get fixed and waiting.

Agree with ^ unless u r an electrican that knows ur electronics and sh*t like that.

If you want to verify whether or not the head unit's internal amp has been cooked, you can hook up a single test speaker directly to one of the speaker outputs from the head unit. when you do the test all of the other speaker wires should not be hooked up to the vehicle's wiring, and should be taped off individually so that they do not touch each other and also to avoid them coming in contact with a spot of bare metal on the vehicle.

you blew your head unit bud, probably the resitors, i had the same problem
