Depends on what you are working with. You'll have to proivide us with a little more information like vehicle make, model, year and/or component model numbers, etc.

hey man all u gotta do is this...get a cordless drill, take the battery out(make sure its no more than a 12v drill)  leave a little bit of speaker wire on the factory speaker when cut the wires and touch them to the two leads on the drill battery.  of course make sure u khow which on the drill battery is positive or negative.  it will pop the speaker either out, or suck it in.  if it sucks in, the wires are reversed, if it pushes the speaker out....then u have positive and negative in phase.  so there you go....if u got any questions email me italnpimp59@hotmail.com

If you are running new speaker wire in the vehicle it does not matter which you use as positive or negative, as long as all the speakers are wired the same way. The wire does not distinguish between a + or - signal, they are striped so that installation is easier. On an aftermarket radio, the solid speaker leads are + and the striped are -.

I'm gonna jump in here.
Are there any disadvantages to wiring speakers in a reverse polarity?
I recently wired some in, and I'm not sure if they're in correct polarity. I havnt had any problems with them yet.

Sometimes wiring speakers out of phase from each other will give you a better sound stage on the front speakers. Doing this only on the mids will solidify the sound stage but this works on some vehicles.... not all.

In theory, for each 6 dB per octave filter applied to a speaker, the speaker will be 90º out of phase from the original signal. Using a 12 dB per octave filter (crossover) will cause the speaker to be 180º  out of phase with one with no filter applied. In this case, you would want to wire these speakers electrically out of phase with the others if no filters are applied to them for all speakers to be mechanically in phase*. There are obviously more factors involved that contribute to speakers being mechanically in phase, and in some cases it may not be possible, especially in an automobile, however an experienced ear is the best tool for obtaining the best results.
