I have installed a Pioneer stereo model DEH-1400 in my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport.  The original stereo was stolen, but the wire harness appears to be intact.  After the unit was installed, it didn't do anything.  It seems as if there is no power to it.  What is the most likely problem?  If the power is connected incorrectly, what kind of damage could it do?  I disconnected it from the vehicle, but I'd like to get it to work if possible.  Help please!

Did you use a wiring harness from Metra or Ai ? or did you hardwire it into the Jeep ? Check the fuse ( 10 amp ) on the back of the radio to ensure that it is still good. If this is burned out, then replace it and see if it will start up. If it burns out again, then you have a short on your power wire somewhere along the way.

Another thing is to make sure that your fuse in the fuse box ( or engine ) is still good. When the thieves stole the original stereo they may have grounded out the wires and burned out the fuse in the fuse panel. Check here first.

I wired it into the Jeep.  The original wiring was hanging out of the dash, so this was a pretty easy job.  I checked the fuses in the radio and the Jeep's fuse box.  They appear to be fine, but I replaced them anyway.  There still appears to be no power to the radio.  It won't turn on.  Thanks for the help, though.  Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Where did you ground the DEH-P1400 to ?? Jeep has a grounding strap that needs to be grounded in order for the system to work properly. Check this out and post your results if you haven't already done so.

I connected the radio ground to the ground wire on the Jeep.  This is a black wire that was bundled with the others.   I didn't see a grounding strap (and I'm not sure that I'd recognize it if I didPioneer Stereo in a Jeep Cherokee -- posted image.).  Were should this be located?  Is it something that needs to be hooked to the radio body or one of the wires?  Thanks for all the help!

The strap , like you said, would be obvious. If it wasn't there, it probably did not have one but there will be another signle black wire outside of the two plugs with a femail connector on it .  Also,  did you test all your wires before you hooked them up to the factory plug ? Here's a cross reference diagram for each of the wires that are on the plug ( Make sure that the wires that you attached from the Pioneer deck are going to the correct wires on this plug ) :

The graphics are not displaying with your last reply.  I will check for the grounding strap and let you know what I find.  Thanks.

you should check and make sure that your power wires are supplying 12V correctly.  If you have a multi-meter, this is an easy task, and if you dont have a multi-meter, go pick one up from Radio Shack, Sears, Home Depot etc.  These things are really handy.

Make sure your constant 12V is always supplying 12V.  Then check the switched 12V before turning the ignition or to the accessor position, and it shouldn't read any voltage, then when you turn the key, it should read 12V.  I always use the cigarette lighter slot for my ground when I am testing wires.

Good luck!
