I've always used screws and glue, predrilling the holes to avoid cracking.

cut the panels from 3/4" MDF or HDF.run a bead of Elmer's wood glue along all the edges when you put it together, then use 1.5" coarse-thread drywall screws, countersunk, about every 4" along all glued connecting lines.after the box is glued and screwed, cut 1" square cross-braces, and run them along the inside of all adjoining panels as needed for support and to eliminate or reduce box flex.then take clear caulking and run a good bead of it along all edges to seal the box air tight.fill the box half full with loose polyfill, and mount subs after covering the box in desired material... cloth, carpet, vinyl, fleckstone, etc..don't use staples or nails. neither will hold well. you want screws.-GlassWolf
