Check the fuse at the side of the car. There are several fuses for the light circuit, make sure you check them all as well as check inside the engine bay for the other fuses. The illumination wires do not need to be hooked up ( not necessary ) unless you want to have the dimmer attached to the Kenwood.

Make sure that the unused wires are taped on the ends SEPARATELY so that they do not ground out on each other or on the frame of the car. Also, make sure that there is not any broken or frayed wires in the back of the deck. Sometimes when installers put the player back into the dash they force it in causing a snagged wire or it ends up pinching the wire casuing a short.

I'll have to tape the end of the orange wire and the orange and white one. What would happen if they were to touch or ground out.

If the wires touch ground the lights will go out. The fuse will blow or worse, the display on the unit will not work, but everything else will.

So now my question is how do I fix this? if I've already replaced the fuses and as many bulbs as I can find. The radio unit lights up. The clock and the mileage thing light up also, until I turn the headlights on, but my speedometer, air conditioning buttons and such do not. I  am trying to get these to light up again. Someone told me that I may need a new light switch for my steering column but I don't want to waste my money on that and its not the problem.
