Brake Lights on 2001 Safari

I have a 2001 GMC Safari with a remote starter that has worked fine...up until a week ago. After I pressed the brakes to disengage the remote my brake lights quit working...that is the two at the turn signals the third brake light on the back window still works. I have checked the fuses under the dash and in the engine compartment...all fine.   Checked trailer wiring harness (which was fine) and then removed it to take it out of the picture. Anybody ever come across this? Any ideas where to look (inline fuses or breakers)? Any help would be appreciated.   cdd1

I agree, it sounds like the bulbs. If one of the brake lights are working then there is power going through the switch. It shouldn't have anything to do with the alarm.Certified Security Specialist

I've been sick lately, sorry I won't be on much.

I have already replaced both bulbs - nothing...checked for power at brake pedal switch - OK. I will check for power at the bulb sockets tomorrow.   I was told that power for brake lights goes though turn signal switch..?? Also, four ways work...go figure! Thanks for your help, please continue to throw things at me...   Chuck

I hate to say it, but three letters are coming to me.....B C M.  Do you have access to a scan tool? The BCM will see the fault.

Yeah, CDD1, on virtually all US cars with red turn signals, the brake lights run through the turn switch. Basically, your turn switch has two sets of contacts in it- one for left, and one for right. It works kinda like an X switch- the rest position gives both brake lamps. When you flip the switch for a turn, you complete a circuit through the flasher, flashing the lamp. The brake switch can still send power to the other contacts to give a steady lamp. Of course, no power sent to the turn switch from the brake switch means no brake lamps. The hazard flashers are a seperate circuit independent of the turn signals. I would check the turn signals- not the hazard flashers. Also- where was your brake signal tapped to? If the BCM IS the problem, try taking the brake signal from the center brake lamp. I think that's a blue wire from the brake switch. That as I remember is merely an output- should have nothing to do with the body electronics.

OK, unfortunately I can't get my hands on a scan tool, right away...however I do have a beat up Haynes techbook that has codes for GMC and I could use their technique of using a jumper wire to retrieve the code/ codes (yes/ no ?) The latest event on my electrical picnic is the interior lamp/ delay-off/ exit function does not work on any door, no lights at all. And the hazard switch, when depressed, will make a electrical shorting noise...I have to sort of jiggle and lean the switch to the side to get the hazards to work (until you hit a bump then off she goes). Like I said..What a Picnic!!! Could the hazard switch have something to do with my problem? Could the interior light delay-off function be related? Thanks for all the help and direction guys and I am trying to get my hands on a scanner (Actron has one for $129 - Good Deal?) before I use the bent paper clip jumper idea.    Chuck
