Hello,

I'm installing a keyless entry system and door lock actuators in a 1987 Caprice tomorrow. I was curious if anybody has done one of these and if there is anything to look out for. Also is it possible to add an actuator to a trunk lock that does not have a cable, it is solely opened by the key? I'm guessing I would have to order the electric lock from gm.

i would grease eveything real well when you are in the doors adding the motors.....you dont need the from gm...you can buy a trunk release solenoid. it will have instructions that come with it....its pretty much straight forward

does the trunk mechanism have a small "ear" with a hole it in on one side that moves with the key? almost every one I've done has one (to use if factory power equipped). You can just tie the solenoid to it. A normal doorlock actuator will not typically have enough power for it, and if it did, you'd risk burning it out...

Use the factory solenoid. It may cost more than an aftermarket one but it installs in seconds as aposed to hours trying to mock up something else to work. You can buy a used one from a wrecker, but you only get what you pay for. It may not last as long as a new one. The factory solenoid needs a relay to power it as it can draw up to 10 -15 amps. You can also get the factory switch to install.
