I have a 2002 chevy cavalier.  I am installing a new sound system.  At the moment I have almost everything but one amp and the head unit.  I have a question regarding the head unit.  How many pre-outs do I need?  I am looking to run one amp for the speakers(one set of components, and one set of 6x9s), the one amp for my sub.  Now my question is....Do I want three pre-outs or do I want to run everything off of a seperate crossover, the into the amps.  If you get what I am asking.  I think if I run everything off of a crossover, then I will only need one or two pre-outs(?).  I am open to suggestions.

Depending on what kind of crossover you use. If you are going to use a crossover you would only need two preouts. If you are going to use a sub amp on your head unit I would make sure you have a sub amp output on there.

If you go with an active crossover, be sure to go with a high quality one, otherwise you'll have noise induced.  An external crossover will usually give you a 3rd set of preouts, (for the sub) if your deck only has two.  I prefer to go with 3 preouts on the headunit, and use the amps' built in crossovers for simplicity's sake.  Another thing to look into is getting a 4 channel amp with line outs as well.  This would allow you to connect your sub amp even though your deck may only have 2 sets of preouts.

I was looking into buying a profile clarus 4 channel amp.  I had a profile for my onld subs and it did its job, plus it is very inexpensive.  This amp is 65w x 4 RMS plus it has a set of pre-outs.
