covering wires

just a quick question about how you guys usually cover your wires? my friend told me just to use electrical tape. i guess i worry too much. i had been covering them with electrical tape and then putting a small peice of wire loom around it. my friend told me that putting too much stuff around the wire like that is going to make it too hot and may cause problems. so should i just trust the electrical tape?

electrical tape is just fine, I use that all the time.  making them too hot, no way, the more you protect it, the less chance you have of shorting something out.2005 Toyota Corolla S

thanks guys! i just used the loom worried something might poke through the tape or since it gets humid in teh summer here the tape might get loose.

use high quality tape, made for the automobile environment, Scotch has a particular line just for this use, you should check that out.2005 Toyota Corolla S

Too hot??? When my wires get hot.... I worry. The only time I like hot wires is on the filaments of my lights. Ohms law will help your friend.Someone pass me that bottle.

On top of using tape, you can also put the cables in plastic segmented tubing. Tubing that is slit on one side so you can just slide the wire from the side and then put wire ties at regular intervals. I do this to make sure nothing pokes or cuts the the wires and to protect the wires from any liquid such as rain etc. These tubes come in various sizes and you can get the ones you need. Plus you can get shrink tubing which I use on connections. This is great when you want to have a real tight seal that is even better than tape alone. This is only for connections though.

sorry about my terminology. I did not know wire looms were the same as segmented plastic tubing. so you already have the right concept. The shrink tubing is useful to know if you did not already.
