I don't think cotton is used because it doesn't hold resin as well as fleece does. I'm sure three layers of thin cotton shirt would be as strong as a layer of fleece. Do you have any pictures of the box?

You can use whatever you want to get the basic form, fleece is thicker and will give more strength then a t-shirt. You should still reinforce it with fiberglass mat/cloth.

the reason i did use fleece was because of the price i sent to walmart and it was going to be like 70 bucks so i said screw that and tried the cotton, the cotton holded the resin great.

I got fleece from the clearance section at joans for like $3 a yard. Anyway, I'd say use fleece. I've tried doing what you did and it just came out all crappy to me. It formed fine but where the pieces of shirt were connected it would be layered and actually split on one of my boxes dispite 6 layers of glass and mat. For the best performance with fiberglass I'd recomend a solid piece of fleece. Thats my opinion anyway.
