you will want to face them backwards so the bass wave bounces off the back off the car and then comes forward. this lengthens the bass wave and thereby creates louder bass.
Ive always heard that BUT if your saying the wave will bounce off the back then when it comes back (being in the trunk of a coupe) wont it just bounce back again? Since the trunk is seperate from the cab, there are walls all around. JW

the best way to understand sound waves (specifically bass waves) is to actually see it on an oscilliscope, but since I can show you that here I'll explain best I can. Imagine a straight center line on a scope. Now imagine a wavy line that dips below and raises above that center line. The straight line represents the clearest possble sound, thus also being the loudest.  And the wavy line a standard base wave. Now imagine that wavy line as a string laid on the ground in the same wavy pattern. If you took that string by both ends and strecthed it a little. the line would become a little bit straighter and be a little longer, thus achieving a closer resembilance to the straight line on the scope.  This is the same principle applied to lenghtening a bass wave.

if its jammed force it - if it breaks in the process it needed to be fixed anyway

actually the straight line is just the base line, and represents 0.  the farther up and away from 0 the sine wave goes, the louder it is.  the closer together the peaks are on the sine wave, the higher frequency it is.  and just the opposite, the farther the peaks are, the lower the note.  basic physics and algebra.  if you really want to learn and see it demonstrated go here  http://www.bcae1.com/  and click on frequency on the right hand side.
