I already own a 12" w7 that I just built a new box for.  A slot ported box.  In my old setup I had the w7 in a sealed enclosure, with a JBL BP1200.1 running it.

The thing sucked.  THe JBL didn't like the 3 ohm load and it soundlike I had a walmart 8 inch free air sub in the car.   My local shop is lending me an Alpine V12 MRD-M1000 to test it with this weekend.  It's $550 if I decided to buy it (new).

I am just wondering what amps everyone uses to power w7's,   I don't want the JL amps because they are like $200 more then the alpine.

There is no reason the JBL amp would not do the job, if you had it set up correctly and had the sub in a properly designed enclosure.  If it "sucked" I suspect it was not set up correctly.  JBL amps are stable to a 1-ohm load and they are very happy at 3-ohms.  The Alpine amp is a fine amplifier.  EITHER will do about the same job with your W7.

THe JBL amp has always worked fine for me.  and it loves 1 ohms.  But it did not like the 3 ohm load whatsoever for me.  It did sound good.  but it was hitting like an 8 inch sub.  I tried the amp on two 15 w3's and it hit them hard as hell.  I did that to test if it had finally went south on me.  Well I have the new box and it's going in this weekend.  So I will give the jbl a second chance. but I think I like the way this alpine looks 20 times better.  and it's easier to do a clean install with it.

if you think the mrd-m1000 looks nice, , then take a gander at the new mrd-m1001.

I just bought a PPI PCX-1500 to power the 12W7 I'm going to buy soon.  I guess it puts out about 750 watts RMS which is what the sub is supposed to have powering it if you look at the JL Audio chart.
