1/2 or 5/8 mdf is what i use when building stuff that dosn't need to be super strong, , but it has to hold up to viberations, , and bumps in the road and such.

I have used 1/2 inch MDF for amp racks as well as plexi and fiberglass and aluminum and a few other materials I dont even know what they were. For panels and what not I generally use 1/4 or 5/8 mdf.

Amp Rack Thickness-Whats your usual -- posted image.

Sorry for the terrible quality. I couldn't upload it any other way.

I am going to build a "display type" amp rack this time with the amps are standing standing stacked in front of eachother. Like they are standing for a class picture. But laying/angled slighty rearward. I was thinking hardwood might be the most durable for this? Maybe I should use metal brackets for support. Whatever I use it will be carpeted.

I'd love to do plexi if I had a way to cut it.

Jig Saw and a plexi glass blade, thats all I have ever used. Make sure you leave some space between those amps so they can breath. One suggestion for you, why not put one sub on each side of a amp rack that you build in the center. That way everything is symetrical, which usually, at least in my opinion, looks better.
