current draw? Fun story

Here's a fun story for all you veterans who have heard everything.  Yesterday on the busiest day of the year a customer comes in complaining and wanting us to pay for her $700 bill for work done on her truck by GM.  After her battery died she took it to GM and they told her that the alarm was drawing 500 milliamps and removed the whole alarm, when the could have just pulled the fuse.  They then proceed to tell her that the sirus sat radio that went with her kenwood aftermarket deck was tapped into her glove box light and that was drawing 200 milliamps.  Supposedly they fixed this and now the car shows a 7 milliamp draw.  Is it just me or is this totally absurd.  I mean i've been doing this for a while and i was under the impression that alarms draw about 500 to 800 milliamps depending on the amount of sensors.  Am I wrong or what?  Does anyone have an idea what a typical alarm/ aftermarket deck/ sat radio will draw on a battery.  In case anyone was wondering, Viper 350 Alarm, Kenwood Deck, Sirus Radio.  Hey if i'm wrong feel free to blast me.

key word is MILLIAMPS! you have to love the dealers........man they are GREAT! i dont think is was the unit or radio....however, i dont think she will tell you that the dealer was wrong when they find out that the things they D/C were not the problemGood Luck

Unfortunately this part is not absurd, and I have thousands upon thousands of dollars in reciepts stating so. What happens is that if you tie into a dome light on the chevy's the bcm will never time out. So basically the car's computer will never shut off and the battery will die. Unfortunately your shop is in the wrong for this. If the sat radio wasn't tied into this wire then I would tell the dealership to f**k off. Also don't tie into any domelight wire for power in any European car. Also GM considers a parisitic current draw anything above 50 milliamps.Certified Security Specialist

I've been sick lately, sorry I won't be on much.

see that's the thing, the sat radio is hooked up through the deck, there is no power for the sat radio the power comes from the decks wiring harness.  With kenwood the power is in the Din cable that connects the tuner to the deck, so I have no idea what the dealership is talking about.  Anyway i'll post what happens when I find out.

LOL Another satisfied GM customer. Will they ever learn to tell the truth and keep a customer. Instead they cheat people for a quick buck and then make up some BS why they charged you $$$ for a easy fix. "Remove the fuse" and tell her to take it back to who installed it.
