Hi all,

I have a 1999 Expedition with a Avital 6500 alarm/remote start.  When it is cold (below 50) and the remote start is activated if always takes 2 tries to start.  It seems to be worse this year.  I saw a procedure to "learn" the rpm in the install manual.  Should I repeat this procedure?

Second problem is that sometimes it will crank and run for a minute or 2 and shut itself off.   If I restart it remotely again, it will stay running sometimes but sometimes it will shut off a second time.  I have never had it happen a 3rd.  When it is really cold, I have been going out and cranking with the key as I have to do my truck that way anyway.  I am installing a remote start in it this weekend, so I would like to get this one working correctly.

Thanks,

Chris

Make sure you have the tach wire input programmed properly and also make suer that you do n ot ahve any burned out bulbs in the brake circuit. This could cause a slight feedback into the brake input wire and shut the RS unit down.

Jeff,

I reran the programing for the tach this weekend.  I also checked all of the lights.  I might have found the problem.  All of the wires were just wrapped around and tapped.  No crimps, no solder, no wire nuts, just wrapped and tapped.  I spent the afternoon  soldering all of the connections and cleaning up the mess I was left by the original installer.  We had all kinds of problems with it from the start.   The AC never worked in remote start and I found out they did not hook up the AC line from the ignition switch.  It had been stripped, but then taped back up.  I added a relay to power it so now that should work right.

I'll let you know if I got it.

Thanks again,

Chris
