Some of the old Orion amps are 1/2 and even 1/4 ohm stable. These amps, much like the memphis HC-50 are often rated at low watts, like 50x4, when in reality they can produce 600-800W at a low impendance level.

my x100s was about 14" long, maybe 18" at the most. the actual amp section was only about 2" tall, but it also had a 2" tall heat sink on the top...looked cool though , a bunch of fins. kinda like the old rockford amps, but before they looked like that.

most of the hc amps are rated from the factory at 1/2 ohm stereo so the competitor knows it will go at least that low.  after that your in no man's land but alot of people drop the impedances even lower than that for 'burps' not extended playing.  they are friggen huge too, mine are 24 inches long by i think 9 by 2.5.  also check out the earthquake phd series amps i think they have a 1000, 2000, and 5000.  ive heard people drop those to like .125 ohm, yikes!

i ran my amp at 1/2 ohm stereo daily, it never even got warm. awesome preformance.  my shop has a kicker 650.4 we used to run our sound board with. we had it running 16 speakers, not subs, for quit a while. it doesn't work any more.
