What kind of alarm do you have ? Sometimes the alarm does not activate the horn unless it has been triggered. If you want the horn to honk for arming and disarming verification, use the siren output wire if it's a negative output.

IT'S  IMPULSE RES-R

REMOTE START WITH KEYLESS ENTRY AND THIS MODEL DOESN'T HAVE A SIREN OUTPUT ONLY FOR THE HORN

You may need a relay to boost the negative trigger of the RES-R to give it a more solid negaitive signal. Wire a relay in this way:

  • 30 - Output to HORN wire on car
  • 85 - BROWN wire from alarm
  • 87 - GROUND to chassis of car
  • 86 - 12 volts constant
  • 87a - NOT USED

Please post your results to see if this will help. Otherwise you may have a faulty HORN wire. Check to see if the BROWN wire does indeed output a negative signal .

An IMPULSE Huh?  I had experince once with that crappy brand!  Last time I used that brand.   The circuitry inside was poor design and they couldn't even give you a STANDARD siren output !  I ended up having to do some circuit modifications to do what I needed it to do.  From what I remember, the Horn output was a pulsed negative and was tied in with the same output that controls the parking light flash relay.   So in this case, you might as well use the parking light output to control the horn.   However,  you won't get your arm/disarm chirps with either of the outputs.

My suggestion:   use a reputable brand.   otherwise Good luck!

Well, I'm not sure what you consider a moderate price, but I typically stick with a brand called Megalarm in the 45-65 range.   I know the Impulse you can get for like $25-$40 range,  but you end up getting what you paid for.   In the LA area huh?  I'm not sure if there's and good brands in downtown,  The ones I use I get from the manufacturer/distributor.

Good to hear that things worked out. If the Impulse system you have is working properly now, there's no need to buy another alarm . If you feel that you need to upgrade this system in the near future you will have more than enough choices out there for entry level alarm systems and remote starters.
