Keep Blowing subs!

Alright, I have a feeling that we might just be asking to much from sets of 10inch subs but hear me out. System 1...2 10 inch eclipse 7100 series aluminum subs powered by a kicker kx1200.1   birth sheet says 1502rms@1@14.4 volts.    Now we can maintain a steady 13.5 with a full burp When I adjusted the amp I used a 42hz test tone and set the amp at close to 70volts on the output giving me approx 1000watts with 14.4 volts power. Gain is at 6-7 of 10 we have 2.5 volt outs on our deck and bass boost is at 9 of 14    everything inside the cab on the radio is set to 0 or lower.     Now we were able to hit 143.6db on the term lab in a 1998 civic coupe trunk car not hatch!.    but the subs wouldnt hold,   after a few runs they were over excurting horribly and not able to stay linear,   surround was wrinkling and such Day 2 we had to use our old memphis m3 10's   able to hit 143.5db but after only 1 day of street beat on the subs one has gone out just as the eclipse's.   they will almost jump out of the box and distort like mad once you get past half volume. Both subs have been ran in the same box as they are both sutible in the box.    the box demensions are 1.68 cu ft internal tuned to 34hz. slot port design. I am really getting tired of this now,    and getting frustrated, I had turned the amp down to nearly 60 volts output for the street on the memphis subs.   both subs are rated at 400rms.    the amp is supposed to produce 1502@1ohm@14.4 by the birth sheet, but I havnt seen that as far as rms yet. Let me know I am kinda baffled, I really dont remember the last time I blew a sub not intentionally.    I am just thinking I am expecting way to much from mid quality 10's, and i need to set up.2009 0-1000 Trunk WR 154.0DB 2009 1001+ Trunk WR

thats what it sounds like to me as well. You are just trying to feed to much power to subs, and being they are in a ported box, that doest help any either. The only options I am seeing here is either upgrade the subs or turn the amp down further. Also are you using a subsonic filter?double-secret reverse-osmosis speaker-cone-induced high-level interference distortion, Its a killer

well the sub sonic filet is on, i believe on this amp it cuts at 20hz.   I have gone ahead and turned the amp down again and I think things should be fine untill we can look into bigger subs.     Right now the choice is between adire bramha 12's, Adire Tumult 12's, RE XXX 12's or possibly some others if Meghan decides not to run at any more shows this year.   We have 2 more amps so I can either run each sub with 1500rms, or if I can get 2 or 3 subs to run between a 1.5-2 ohm load that would get me around 3000 with 2 amps strapped.    we have lots of power to go around the charging system still needs some upgrades such as a bigger alternator before we add any more then one kicker.     The 135 amp will just not do more then one amp So if anyone has any comments on those subs let me know.   I have heard the RE subs go best in a wall and that is not a option, this is a daily driver.    So I am leaning between the 2 adire's.2009 0-1000 Trunk WR 154.0DB 2009 1001+ Trunk WR

upgrade your subs,i have a friend using 2 15" RE XXX in a slot port design box powered by a Hifonics 3000 watt amp and is hitting 150.2 on term-lab.

20hz is too low a subsonic filter for a 34hz slot ported design. Regardless of that though, auex is dead on - this is far too much power for those subs in a ported box. The fact that it is a large ported box with a high tuning frequency makes things even worse. Even if you aren't clipping the amplifer, you're going to run into trouble with excursion in that box with any more than 300w or so to the subs. :( Add even some mild clipping to the box situation and buh bye subs. If you want to run ported with that kind of power you need way more excursion and more thermal handling. The Tumult or XXX seems like the ticket. Also, it might be worth an investment in a hand-held o-scope. Setting the gains very precisely becomes so important when running gear at its mechanical limits. New Project: 2003 Pathfinder
