I have a compustar alarm with the 2WSS-R remote. Thus far, I've actually had a piece of clear tape over the screen to keep the screen from getting all scratched up in my pocket.    But, seeing as how the tape itself gets scratched up and hazy, and it's hard to change neatly, will the screen stay fairly clear with day to day use? I just don't want to end up with a remote that I can't read a few years down the road. And it's an expensive remote, so I don't want to replace it.

It will get scatch up sooner or later. Why punish your eyes with the clear tape still wrap up on the screen. As long as you don't drop the remote it will be fine. Mine is somewhat scatch up, but that is easily fix with a high speed buffer. That far down the road, I am sure the remote will out last your car anyway.   Beside, the remote should be half price by that time.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.Are remote screens easily scratched -- posted image.

My screen name pretty much say's it all when it comes to how I treat equipment. I drop it, toss it, keep it in my pocket with other things, etc. And yes it's scratched, but not even close to unreadable. And this after a year of abuse. Unless your harder on your toys than I am (and that would intentional abuse), I'd say you'll be alright for a few years.

You can get new remote cases without having to replace the entire remote. Compustar will give them to dealers free. If you call them, they'll probably send you a spare.
