The tach wire is BLACK/ WHITE at the ECM. On the 6 cylinder models, it is in the 2nd plug from the bottom, pin 1. On the 8 cylinder models, it is in the bottom plug, pin 5.
On the 6 cylinder models, you can also find this wire at the data link connector under the driver side dash.
The Hilux (Surf) is a 4Runner in North America.

BTW, this information is for the gasoline engine not the turbo diesel engines.

Yes it should be the same. If you can't find the wire at the ECM use an injector wire instead.

I think the Hilux is like the old style Tacoma. Look for a light GREEN/ black at the data link connector under the dash. If it doesn't have one it should be at the instrument cluster....

hey there it may be a bit late i'm in WA and have recently fitted a tacho to my lux. remove the instument cluster and behind it you will find a yellow plug, it has...
(+)acc power.
(+)ignition power.
and
(-)earth. use these for your power supply.
on the back of the instument cluster on the middle plug
you need to tap into the red wire with a white trace as your ignition pulse.
cheers hope to be of assistance.
