Best Speakers

Ok tht last response cleared it up. I always thought you weren't supposed to use home speakers because they weren't built as tough for the elemenst like car speakers. I know what's "best" is up to the listener, but usually the higher end stuff is going to sound better than some cheap stuff. And the prices were so low I just wasn't sure if they really were higher end, because of the price.

Keep your eye on the bargain speaker department at Madisound.  I'm using some Vifa mids in my home HT system that were originally made for JBL, and got them at $6 each.  For 4" drivers they have an Fs of 65 Hz and are constructed with the same materials as car audio speakers.  They're 6 ohm and would be a good choice to use in a car front soundstage application where room is limited.  But when you see the really good bargains they sell out quick.  Parts Express used to have more of the Vifa buyouts but now Madisound is sole source of the brand since the company Vifa was bought.

Some are still a good bargain even at higher prices.  I just picked up six Vifa premium line mids for $21 each that sold new for nearly double that.  I consider that a reasonable bargain.

Most of the cones are polypropylene with rubber surrounds now, or if paper, at least treated with a protectant.  These are all good for the harsher car audio environment.  lf you're building your own passive crossover for a set of speakers you select and put together, it doesn't matter what their impedance is.  You design the crossover for their individual characteristics.

Here's a current buyout that could work very well mated with a tweeter for a nice front soundstage.  It could be mated, for example, with this tweeter and crossed at 3000 to 3500 Hz.  Could be a very nice car audio application.  Sometimes it's very well worth experimenting.
