i am in the market for a cordless soldering iron.  I know there is a nice blue point one, but don't really want to pay that price for one.

so, can anyone recomend one to me?  wether it be a standard solder tip, or butane.  I am looking for something under $50.00

Believe it or not Radio Shack has one for 20 bucks that works great.    Soldering iron plus a torch.         Butane

You get what you pay for, if you are installing as a hobby get the cheapy. If it is your lively hood spend the money I have 2 of the bluepoints for myself and 1 for the shop tool box. I've tried atleast 5 different types of cordless soldering irons and none compaired to the blue point...

I'm not sure how much the blue point one is, but this is the one I got:

Last blue point I got was $85 dollars, but it took some dickering with the snap on guy.  I haven't tried the one from parts exspress just the one from matco, cornwell and of course radio shack and the hardware store........

Wahl 770 rechargable cordless.  It gets more than hot enough,  takes about 10-15 seconds to heat up and has a light on it if you are in a poorly lit area.  Takes aAbout $45. I have one and all the other installers where I work are wanting one themselves and I may get a 2nd ( it usually dies on me while doing an alarm install, I have one of those bluepoint butane powered ones as a backup).

There is also a 7800 model that recharges in 1/4 the time that is about $20 more expensive.

I have the bluepoint and love it. Used 6 different types and blue point is best. For small and delicate work I use the Cold Heat one and it actually works quite well and it's only 20 bucks Canadian.

Weller also makes some great portable soldering irons that arent too pricey. You can pick one up from sears for under 50.
