a friend of mines child is doing a school project and needs to build one

What exactly do you want the sequencer to do? Is this going to be 12v or 110v? You just want to push a button and have one light come on, push a second button have a 2nd come on or something different? You will need to explain this a bit more.

There is no real easy way to do this. It is very possible, but you need to use timers along with the relays and I think the cost and work involved would get out of hand for a school project. Its hard to get it to start over again after it goes through a whole cycle as well. I have built them before but I used a PLC, so that makes it easy. Let me know if you really want to do it and I will get a diagram together for you.

I will send you the drawing within the next few days. It will be in motor control ladder logic style, but from that you should be able to do all the connections without much trouble. I don't know of any place to get 12V timing relays off the top of my head, but I will see what I can dig up because they are essential to the project.
