How much weight does using fiberglass instead of mdf save?  I'm trying to build a box where weight is sort of a factor and am trying to decide if fiberglass is worth the trouble...

fiberglass boxes weigh about 1/2 less than an equal size MDF box. Some competition fiberglass boxes can weigh just as much though as they will have 14+ layers of glass. But if ur looking for a standard box for regular subs then fiberglass will save you weight.

i think it's more like 1/4, it's very light. have you picked up a carbon fiber hood and compared it to a regular hood. It's pretty much like that.

ur probably right lilboi, my guess was based more on a standard box with an MDF base, a full fiberglass box is much lighter, probably around the 1/4 mark like lilboi said.

BUTTTTT.... first thing to know about fiberglass is that it is not sturdy if you create one big flat surface. If youre thinking about forgetting MDF all the way, your box is going to crack. You need MDF side/top/bottom pannels in order to have a box. IF you think you can make a skeleton out of wood then fiberglass the rest of it, you'll end up with touble. The only time you don't need mdf is when you're molding it to the side walls (where there are curves).
