I grew tired of my current installation, so i'm going to try my hand at fiberglassing. The problem is, i can't decide which way to direct my subs. The car is a 2000 nissan altima, and the two subs are 12" rockford punch hx2's, dual 2 ohm, powered by a phoenix gold qx900.1.
Here are some dilemmas i have:
I've seen cars with off-axis subs, pointing at different angles. I believe they were in sealed enclosures. Do any of you know advantages/disadvantages to this setup?
I believe that my subs are louder when facing the end of my car, and are placed as close to the taillights as possible. The problem is i don't want to lose my trunk. I was thinking of making the enclosure as if it were to stay against the rear seats, but using a linear actuator to push the enclosure towards the taillights when i wanted to. What do you people think?
Ported or sealed? I don't have experience tuning boxes, nor the instruments required to measure frequency. So if anybody would be willing to give me advice on tuning, that would be greatly appreciated, unless you guys think i should go with sealed for better response.
I guess thats it for now...
Jon

Depending on the type of music you listen to is the pending factor in your install.  Facing the subs towards your tail-lights makes the subs sound louder because of wave reverberation.  This has its' advantages and disadvantages.  With various music you will want the boom effect and with some music you may want the smooth settle sound.

The difference between a ported enclouser and a sealed enclouser are:   A sealed enclouser requires more power to create sounds at lower volumes, ported enclousers sometimes do not go as low as sealed enclousers.

If you are doing the box yourself you may want to do a sealed enclosurer because when it comes to ported boxes they require a lot more calculations and configurations.  A sealed box normally requires that the air space that the speaker requires is meet and that's it.  When you get into ported boxes even the placement and the size of the port counts.  If you place the port in the wrong place or if it is the wrong length you could end up with a box the whistles or a box that sounds like it's gasping for air.
