hi

my head unit does not remote control my amp how do i switch my amp on/off

Your head unit only controls turning the amp on and off when the head unit is powered on or off. Wire a switch in between the amp turn on wire so you can control it manually.

is there another way other than a manual switch that i might forget to switch off

Use the remote on signal lead from your head to the remote on input of the amp.   It's usually a blue wire.

or blue/ white. If it is a factory head unit then you will have to use the ignition wire.
