May have damaged alpine head unit

I removed my subwoofer box to work on it and i left the ends exposed, thinking I would hook them back up in a minute when I finish checking something on the box. I then had to leave for a moment so I turned on my truck and I heard a pop. I turned around and saw the wires were touching so I seperated them and taped them off and kept on driving. I then could not hear anything. Once I got back, I tried turning the truck off and back on and then I hear a pop as soon as the head unit turns on. I still hear nothing. Every time I turn the head unit off and on again, I hear the pop and half a second of static and then nothing. Does anyone know what I could try to get it working again and/or what happened? I would have thought I messed the amp up before the head unit. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

can you clarify and i left the ends exposed.... the ends of what?     RCA cables?   Speaker leads?  Power and Ground cables? Kevin Gerry

Sorry for confusion. I left the speaker wire ends coming from the amp to the subwoofer exposed. I only have one sub so it was one set of wires. I also had a chance to play with things when I got back from work today. I tried hooking the sub back up anyways to see if anything would happen and I got sound. I got just the subwoofer sound. I turned it up some and got sound from the speakers, but with very bad pops with music, then would go out and only the sub would play. When I turned it down and back up again, I would hear sound with bad pops and then only the sub again. So I tried to turn the balance all the way to the left and suddenly I got normal sound from that side. So when I gradually turned the balance back to the right, I got better sound, but still with pops, but not as bad as before. Now the sound will not go completely out, but if I keep the balance centered, I get pops, so I am currently listening to music on the left side only. I will have time tomorrow to unhook everything and try to narrow down the problem some. Still, any ideas will help. Thanks alot.
