I am in the process of installing a Viper 5101 remote start along with an Expresskit XK04 in my 2004 Ford Explorer Limited (automatic).   I have only made these connections to the harnesses themselves but have not connected the harnesses to the Viper 5101 module at this time.  I want to be sure everything is correct first.

I'm pretty sure I've got most everything connected properly but I had some doubts about the heavy gauge connector and one question about the GWA wire.  The questions are embedded below with Bold and Italicized and surrounded by ***** for easy identification.

Harness 1:

H1/1 RED / white trunk release: Connected via relay to purple / YELLOW hatch release wire at hatch harness
H1/2 Red 12v (+): Connected to the yellow 12V(+) wire at the ignition harness.
H1/3 Brown (-) horn: Connected to yellow/light green at ignition harness.
H1/4 WHITE/ brown Light flash: Not connected
H1/5 Black ground : Connected to vehicle ground at driver kick panel
H1/6 Violet (+) door trigger input:  Connected to dome supervision wire BLACK/ light blue at driver kick panel harness to rear
H1/7 Blue (-) factory horn input: Not connected
H1/8 Green (-) door trigger input:   Not connected
H1/9 BLACK/ white dome light output:  Connected via relay to dome supervision wire (same as above)
H1/10 WHITE/ blue (-) remote start/turbo timer activation: Not connected
H1/11 White parking light output: Connected to brown at headlight switch (set parking light polarity fuse inside 5101 module to +)
H1/12 Orange grounded when armed: Connected to brown wire from XK04 bypass module *****(Should I use Pin 5: Blue of Remote Start Aux Output 5-Pin Connector instead? Does it make a difference?)*****
Aux harness (H2)
Not connected
Heavy Gauge 8 pin connector
H3/1 Pink (+) ignition input: Connected to RED / light green wire at ignition harness
H3/2 RED / White (+) fused ignition 2: Not Connected*****(The DirectWire wiring guide shows no 2nd ignition wire so I don't need this right?)*****
H3/3 Orange accessory output: Connected to dark GREEN/ light green at ignition harness
H3/4 Violet starter output: Connected to red wire at ignition harness
H3/5 Red ignition input 1: Connected to 12v(+) constant yellow wire at ignition harness*****(Is this ok?)*****
H3/6 Pink/white ignition 2 : Not connected*****(The DirectWire wiring guide shows no 2nd ignition wire so I don't need this right?)*****
H3/7 Pink/Black flex relay input: Not connected
H3/8 RED / Black (+) fused accessory/starter input: Connected to 12v(+) constant yellow wire at ignition harness*****(Is this ok?)*****
Remote start 5 pin connector
1 BLACK/ white (-) neutral safety switch input: Connected to vehicle ground
2 Violet/White tack input wire: Not Connected (counting on virtualtach to take care of this)
3 Brown (+) brake shutdown wire: Connected to tan/black wire at brake pedal connector
4 gray n/o hood switch: Connected to included hood switch, switch opens when hood is closed and goes to ground when hood is open.
5 blue/white defogger output: Not connected

Remote Start Auxiliary Output 5 Pin Connector:

Not Connected

Door Lock Harness, 3-Pin Connector:

1 Blue: Connected to pink / YELLOW at driver's kick panel harness to rear

2 Empty:  Not used

3 Green: Connected to pink/light green at driver's kick panel harness to rear

Any and all advice is welcomed and appreciated.  This is the first remote start I've installed.  I've done several alarms but that was over 5 years ago.

Thanks!

- Vince

Almost perfect! I see just a few small mistakes:
1. Orange GWA going to XK04 brown wire: This will theoretically work, but will cause the XK04 to remain on whenever the Viper system is armed, possibly draining the battery.
You should disconnect this, and use the small blue/white "status" wire from the remote start, to the brown on the XK04. In this case, the XK04 will come on slightly before remote start, shut off slightly after remote start shutdown, and won't activate at any other time.
2. Heavy RED / white wire not connected. Not sure about this. If it really, really only feeds into the Ignition 2 circuit of the remote starter, you'll be fine. Go ahead and try it out. Just be prepared to connect it in the event the remote starter doesn't work.
3. Doorlocks: Should be green to pink / YELLOW, blue to pink/green. Either you mistyped or you really connected the lock wires backwards. But you can't hurt anything this way.....if you find that the locks are working backwards after your install is done, just go to the running board and reverse your connections. Not a big deal.
4. If it's a Limited, you probably have a factory alarm. There are several GREEN/ purple (or is it PURPLE / green? I always forget!) wires in the running board, where you got your locks. Test all of them to find out which one makes a ground when you turn the key in the door to the "unlock" position. Connect the Viper's GREEN/ black "factory disarm" here.
5. You didn't mention where/how you connected your XK04. Regardless, in my opinion, especially for a novice installer, the best, least-frustrating way is to do it like this:
1. Install everything, but leave XK04 unplugged.
2. Attempt to remote start while leaving one of your existing keys in the ignition swtich. Test all functions...hood, brake, safety switch, lock, unlock, whatever.
3. If #2 was successful, go ahead and call your install good, try plugging in the XK04, and go from there.
4. On the other hand, if #2 failed, call your install bad, go back and troubleshoot and fix it before moving on to messing with the XK04.
If you try to do everything at once, and it doesn't work, and you're not aware of how Ford's factory security light behaves, you could be there all day trying to figure out if the problem is with your Viper, your car, your install, or your bypass.

Chris, thank you for your help!

1. I connected the XK04 Brown wire to the status wire as you suggested.

2. I connected the heavy RED / White wire just to be sure.

3. I actually had them connected correctly but typed it backwards.

4. I couldn't find the wire you were mentioning.  I did find two PURPLE / green wires in that area but both were constant grounds. (?)  You mentioned that I probably have a factory alarm, but how can I be sure?  Is there a way to test it?

Additionally I disconnected the hood pin switch wire because it wasn't working properly.  I'll fix that later.  It should start with it not connected to anything, right?

And of course, the remote start is not working.  I disconnected the XK04 and put the key in the ignition.  It is flashing the lights 8 times instead of starting.  The manual says that means the neutral safety wire doesn't have a ground.  I checked it and had 2 ohms.  So, I connected it differently and have a perfect connection now.  Still the same number of flashes.

In addition to that, my door locks are not functioning properly.  The unlock works, but not the lock.  Factory remote and switches still work properly.  Connections were double checked.  If I manually send a ground through the connections, it will lock.  The weird part is that both the lock and unlock were intially working properly, but then the lock function quit, then it started working again, and then quit again a little while later.  I've double checked all of the input wires to the Viper 5101 module and they are all reading as the should.  What's my next move?  Has anyone seen these symptoms before?  I don't know if it makes a difference but the unit I'm installing is a factory refurbished one.

Also, I have a second Viper 5101 that I planned to install in my other vehicle after this one.  I decided to swap out the main module to see if it was defective.  After installing the second module I attempted to remote start and initially received 7 flashes/honks.  The paperwork indicated that the Manual Transmission Mode was activated (of course, I forgot to program it before I remote started) after my attempt to program it I now receive 8 honks when I attempt to remote start but I know that the neutral safety switch has a good ground.

Is there a technique to programming with the valet switch?  I can't seem to get the unit to allow me to change from Manual Tranmission Mode to Automatic Transmission Mode (Menu 3; Feature 1; Option 2)

You can test for a factory alarm by winding down the drivers window, close all doors and lock with the factory remote or use the key in the drivers door. Wait a few minutes, reach in and open the drivers door using the interior handle. If it goes off, you have one...

Thanks Mike and Chris for all of the help.

I actually have it all working now.  The problem was actually quite simple and I'm embarassed to say what it was...but it seems that all of my symptoms were because I did not connect the remote start defeat toggle switch!  Very silly but I am releaved to have it all installed and working properly.

Next up is my 2002 Acura TL Type-S...thanks again!
