The remote will beep three double beeps whenever it cannot communicate with the alarm. So if you are out of range that is what you will get.

i have had two 791vx's in the shop last week and bothof them were giving me a out of range beep when i was standing right next to the car. i tried to replace the antenna and cable but it didn't work, finally replaced the brain and all was fine

Winman is right (couple post above) and yes what you have is normal. my remotes (both)show RX activity as well even out of range. the only way to know is to press any button(preferably Lock) and if it is out of range it will beep 3 times. and does what you describe above. if you are in range it will just responde normally.

the reason i recommend push lock is that if you are at the limit of range and press unlock and it does then you may be out of luck to relock it..... it happenen to me once... hahah i had to run down the stair to get closer to underground garage to rearm it....:)
