1996 ranger/gas guage

 the guage doesn't register. fuses are good,power to tank.help wife wants guage backkeep smiling tomorrow will be better

Also, make sure you have a good ground at the gas tank. I know if they are not grounded the gas gauge will not work and/or like said above it could be your sending unit.

an easy test,  take a test light with a very sharp point (not a powered test light, just a passive test light that has a probe end and a wire with an alligator clip and NO battery in it) clip the alligator clip to a good ground, and with the point end pierce the insulation of the gauge wire near the tank.  with someone sitting in the car (easiest way to do it) and the key on, the guage should deflect fully (it will take a few seconds).  if the guage doesn't move at all, then work your way back towards the dash - or at that point if it's not working, and you know the fuses are good and the dash interface plug is making good contact, you can pull the dash and check the guage itself.  if you do get guage deflection when you check it with the test light, then your float has either sunk, came apart, or it's even remotely possible that you could have worn the sweeper thru the coil on it, though that's pretty doubtful as it could create sparks.   fuel guages don't usually just go bad, so i'm guessing it's probably the float has either come apart or sunk.  you'll know more once you check with the test light.
