We recently purchased a 98 Accord, and soon after the stock HU including the harness was stolen (they cut all the wires - jerks!). We've replaced it w/ a 2001 unit from another Accord but after the install, the SW controls no longer work. The shop that re-wired it said the new harness didn't have the wire for the control. After some research and other boards, I've learned that the control works as a "varied resistance one-wired system". I gotta tell you - I took Physics and must have slept thru that lecture.

My question lies in this - everything works great w/ the stereo except for the SW control. Is there a way that I (or the installer) can "insert" the wire into the #3 pin of the harness and it will work? How does one do that? Do I NEED to buy another harness (w/ the #3 wire already included in the harness) and re-install it after removing the existing harness? Of course, this would be my least favorite option as it's the most work w/ all the connectors already in place.  I'm reasonably handy, so if it's not too complicated/dangerous I'll try it myself.

Thanks for your insight & knowledge.

From the experience that I've had with OEM stereos with SW controls, if the actual unit does not have the capability of SW operation, you can not add it by inserting the wire into #3 pin of the harness. Do you know if the '01 unit had this option on it ? If it did, then it a simple solder and your done. If it did not have it, then you will need to find another deck that has this option.
