I have a JVC KD-SX980 from my old car that i want to install in my new 2003 jeep liberty.  I've installed head units in my last three cars, so I have some idea how to do it.  I plan to get a dash kit and wiring harness from crutchfield.  The problem i'm seeing is I can only find 1 screw to loosen to dissassemble the console.  I'm concerned that it may be a lot of snap fit parts to the console that I could risk cracking trying to pop them out.  Am I right or are there other hiden screws or clips?

Also, I may want to upgrade the speakers because the factory speakers are real "muddy" on the bass.  They are an unusual size (6 and3/4").  Can someone suggest a relatively inexpensive replacement since I would need to buy four of them?

Thanks for any help you can give.

There's just one screw behind the ashtray that you need to remove.  The rest of it just involves prying out the bezel using either your fingers or a flathead screwdriver.   Try and just start from the bottom with your fingers and as you loosen it from down there it will come out a bit at the top and then you can get your fingers under the edge up there to pry out as well.  Don't worry you won't break anything.

Once you have that panel taken off there's just two phillips head screws on the left and two on the right of the radio.

The factory speakers are 7" chrysler 3-hole speakers but if you were to get aftermarket speakers I'd go with eithe 6 1/2" or 6 3/4"  speakers.  You might need a speaker bracket adapter thingy if you get 6 1/2s, but probably 6 3/4 would just go right in without an adapter.  If you got them from crutchfield they would include the speaker adapters for free, as well as the door panel disassembly instructions.

When you say "relatively inexpensive" what price range are you thinking of?  Crutchfield has some polk speakers on sale right now.....  one set is a 6 1/2 pair of speakers on for $69.99 and I think you would be extremely pleased with the way they sound, especially compared to the factory ones.  Then there's a set of 6 1/2"  for $49.99.  These would also sound a lot better than factory but they don't play quite as deep as the more expensive pair so that's something to keep in mind.

You obviously don't have to get the speakers from crutchfield but I figured I'd suggest them to you anyways since you're already planning on getting the wiring harness and dash kit from them.  Just in case you wanted to get the harness and kit elsewhere, they are the Metra 70-6502 and 99-6503.  The speaker adapters are Scosche SAC656.
