Hey,

I'm looking for a new Head Unit.  Currently I have a Clarion HD-X10.  That deck is only a pre-amp - and I like that feature.  The rest of my system is - 6.5 Boston Acoustics Rally component speakers up front, a pair of Kappa 4" in the back.  Those four speakers are powerd by an old Alpine V12 delivering 50w to each.  The MB Quart PWE 10" sub ispowered by a PG Titanium 600.2 amp.

For my new deck, I'd like a pre-amp setup like my old clarion.  But this is not an absolute.  I can spend about 300+.  I like the Alpines, the Clarions, Eclipse....

Help me out guys, whats a good SQ deck?

I might be biased, but I've owned clarions and eclipses and in my opinion Eclipse blows clarion out of the water.  The pre-amps are very clean + high voltage.

Also check out Nakamichi.

I really like the new Pioneer decks.  They have lots of built-in EQ functions and filters. On some of the better models you don't even need an seperate EQ, you can run straight to your amps or speakers.

i guess this will be a bias opinion
but i got a sh*tty deck, and when i got my front components, i also lucked out with a 4band EQ.
If it wasnt for the EQ (in-dash mounted) i wouldnt have had so much interest and understanding about how much a good EQ could do for a system.
i'd say go with a Eclipse deck, maybe not go all out, and if you dont find the sound you really want from the decks EQ, look into a EQ to install, i think you will be seriously suprised at how much cleaner the sound is when you've got used to it.
then again i could be full of myself, but i havent regretted the fronts/eq i got.

Alpine, Eclipse, and Nakamichi are of higher quality in my experience than either panasonic or pioneer.

sunshine,

isn't your existing Clarion their highest end, limited edition with the dual 24 bit dac's and copper chassis? Was that not good enough?

For 3 bill's you might locate used high-end Eclipse or Nak in mint condition.

Yes, thats the culprit.  It sounds nice, I just don't care much for the interface.  I've had it for about 2-3 years, and I feel its time to move on.  Thats why Im asking.

Thank you all for your recomendations.  I dont like the Nak's asthetics.  The eclipse is nice, but I went to the local dealer today, and the interface sucks on the Eclipse.  The Alpines are a bit "busy" looking, with the exception of the CDA-9835.  That has a nicer look to it, but the price tag is up there.

I would really like a pre-amp unit?  Dosent anyone make those anymore?

What exactly are you looking for in an interface?
This is beyond your stated budget, but you don't seem to be happy with much, so try McIntosh.

If you don't mind my saying, I think it is a bit insane to be that hung up on the interface. Your current player is excellent. I mean, it isn't like you have sex with the head unit, it kinda just sits there and spins a cd. ;-)
