does it matter what volume of a box you make for the subs. what if its too bit or too small

Yes it matters.  The enclosure is as important as the sub you put into it and if it's too big or too small the performance can change significantly.

It does matter quite a bit.  However you do have some flexibility in the enclosure size required.  You can vary the enclosure size by about 10% without an audible difference.  Stay within those tolerances and you should be fine.

Each subwoofer is different.  It really depends on the theile/small parameters of the subwoofer.  Those parameters are usually supplied by the manufacturer.

I agree with Steven, I am running 2 MTX 1004's in a .66 Cubic FT. per side, Enclosure. That is the mean size for those subs and they hit hard and sound clean. Check the Manufacture's recomendations for your particular sub.
