All,

I have a Rockford Fosgate RFX8350 head unit and the radio (FM&AM) has a lot of static.  I've checked the antenna wiring and it is grounded to body well.

Could a bad HU ground cause this?  Should I ground the HU to the same place as the amp? I don't have any alternator noise, but I really want to make the radio reception better. I live in Denver and my last HU (JVC) had no problems with reception.

Thanks for any ideas or help!

Go to your local automotive store and purchase a new antenna to use as a test antenna doesn’t matter what kind of car it’s for as long as it works. . Plug you test antenna into the back of your head unit if it works fine than you know the problem is on the antenna’s side if it doesn’t then it’s the head. Also what kind of car is this in? Post your results so we can further assist you

You may hav damaged the male connector plug when you took out the antenna from the JVC unit. Make sure that there are no breaks or loose end on the male end of the antenna.

Thanks everyone.  I will check the antenna end etc. tonight.  Any thoughts on the grounding being bad?  would that cause radio problems you think?

Anytime a ground is bad or corroded, you will get problems with electrical devices. Check all grounds from the deck, antenna, the antenna cable from the rear to the front and also check to make sure that the ground on the deck is thick enough gauge as well as short enough that it is not giving too much resistance on the unit. The shorter the ground wire the better the absolute ground for all components attached to it.
