Tech Tip - Running Wires Through a Grommet/Firewall

This is tip for those that don't know about it already.If you need to run a wire(s) thru a factory grommet in the firewall to the engine compartment, you can make a handy tool for this.The next power antenna, or collapsible, that you replace, ( and don't borrow your neighbor's antenna mast cause you can't give it back!) keep the mast and grind off the bottom section (tube) or, the next section (I have used both sizes). Using your bench grinder (every install bay will have one) grind an 45 degree angle on one end. Don't make the tip razor sharp, just enough to pierce through rubber grommets.When you need to run wires thru a grommet, carefully and gently push the tube through the grommet (being careful not to cut through any factory wiring). Now go around to the outside of the vehicle (or vice-versa) and observe where it came out. Readjust if necessary. Then feed your wire(s) through the tube. Then (back to the other side) go around and pull the tube through completely. Presto! You now have your wire ran with a decent water-resisteant seal around the wire. This especially handy in hard to reach places because you get more extension into the engine compartment. And if you have an exceptionally thick grommet, you can stick the tube in your cordless and basically drill thru (again being careful not to cut any factory or existing wiring) them thick ones.As I said, most of the seasoned installers already know this one.......Clean tools = Clean work!
