ok guys I am about to install an aftermarket deck in a 2005 dakota and what I wanted to know is if the expensive rap module is the only option I have for a wiring adapter for it, fyi stock non amplified setup, or if I can just use a basic adapter and then use a fuse tap to get my accessory power like I did in an 08 cobalt, a 120 dollar adapter vs 25 bucks on that install I used a bussman bp/hhh to tap for my switched 12 volts and the el cheapo adapter harness from schoshe foe the power and speaker wire connections.

The OEM system is CANBUS but you can try the el cheapo harness and see if it will work. If it doesn't, then you will need the CANBUS module.

well you see the canbus is on the cobalt to and if you use the cheaper harness you lose the door chimes and what not but the stereo still works on it minus the switched accessory power. I am willing to bet the only thing the canbus is used for is the rap and door chimes as well as the factory amp which he does not have. I am going to give it a shot anyhow but I was wondering if anyone else has run into or did an install on the 05 dakota that can tell me for sure. I discovered the cobalt one from the cobalt forums. It sure beat the heck out of paying the 120 dollars for a dash adapter that does not to do much for you other than chimes and rap power which the customer could care less about.

well I was right, you do not need that expensive adapter for the 2005 dakota, I just wired it up and it works great, client had a clarion vrx485vd dvd unit, I still have to put a switch in it for her to use the dvd while driving but all in all a 44 dollar cure to a 170 dollar problem. Gotta love that. FYI this only works for a non amplified system with no nav system, so just the no frills factory setup.  On the down side the antenna plug for her dvd player was broken so I had to take the female plug off and put some wires there to attach it to the male antenna plug for her for now.
