Head Unit Overheating

If it's getting that hot, there is definately something wrong with the head unit.  If it's still under warranty, take it in for replacement.

Maybe, but a natural byproduct of amplification is heat. If your amp is not getting hot that's great. If it is getting hot this is an indication that the amp is doing it's job, getting rid of heat, unfortunately heat does not go in one direction, it goes inside of a cd player as well and in the case of a plastic cd, it attracts heat quite well. You also have very limited confines inside of the dash cavity to get rid of this heat, coupled with the fact that you have heater vents right there as well, these also heat up that dash cavity. The louder you turn that volume dial, the more current the cd player sucks in, the harder the amp works and the higher the heat signature. The smell could be any number of things, it could be glue residue melting away, lubricating fluids sizzling etc. I would still agree with DYohn that it is worth having the cd player looked at by a dealer. If there is a short in the speaker system, this may also cause an excessive heat build up and ultimate failure of the unit.Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

have it looked at. the deck shouldnt be getting that hot if its just driving the factory speakers. if its still under warranty just piss and moan until they install a new one. dont mess with it yourself because then you'll void the warranty. use the stupid warranty policy to your advantage. good luck.Pete - SPL Enterprise Inc.
